Imagine it’s the early days of fast food, and I’m about to launch the very first McDonald’s. I’ve spent $100 million building the perfect burger empire—marketing, mascots, golden arches, the whole nine yards. To keep competitors from copying me, I decide to ban the sale of bricks to anyone looking to build a similar restaurant. Smart move, right?
Well, along comes McDougals (aka DeepSeek). They take one look at my setup and say, “Great idea! We’re doing the exact same thing, but for just $5.6 million.” But since they can’t buy bricks, they find a clever workaround: build everything with concrete instead.
And here’s the twist—before I even locked down my “no bricks” policy, McDougals already had a secret stash of bricks. So, while they’re telling the world, “Look, this is all concrete!”—if you scratch away at the surface, you might just find… a lot of bricks.
Now, apply that to AI. ChatGPT built the blueprint for powerful AI—it took years and billions of dollars to get here. DeepSeek? Well, they showed up after all the hard work was done, allegedly trained on data they weren’t supposed to have, and then launched an AI model that can rival ChatGPT’s $200/month pro tier—for free.
That’s why people are freaking out. If you could rent a car for $200 a day or take one for free—which would you choose? Exactly.
But here’s the kicker: what happens when the free ride ends? What happens when people realize that using DeepSeek means sending all their data straight to China? If folks panicked over TikTok being a national security risk, what do you think will happen when they realize their businesses, stocks, books, and innovations are being processed by a foreign AI?
So, should you test it out? Sure—just like you’d test-drive a new car. But be mindful of what you put into it because you might not know who’s actually reading your data.
